Bledsoe Elementary Wins National Scholastic Contest for Book Fair

May 11, 2015

Bledsoe Elementary School in Frisco won first place in a national contest sponsored by Scholastic, the book and education materials publisher, for its fall 2014 book fair.

The grand prize was $2,000 in Scholastic Dollars, which can be used to purchase books, and a personal visit from Shannon Hale, author of young adult fantasy and adult fiction.

Hale was joined by representatives from Scholastic on May 1 in presenting Bledsoe and its PTA with an oversized check for their efforts.

Hale spoke with students about her books, passion for reading and writing and encouraged them not to give up in the face of rejection. She also signed copies of some of her popular books and had lunch with members of the Bledsoe Book Club.

The Bledsoe Book Fair, with the theme “Sir Bledsoe’s Castle,” featured costumed characters, a drawbridge and a castle “quest” filled with medieval artifacts to get students engaged and excited about reading.

In addition, a “Literacy League” of 18 community leaders, including the mayor and school board president, made time to visit classrooms on the opening day of the Fair to talk about their love of reading and read books.

An All for Books™ classroom competition benefited Frisco Family Services, which received 62 books for their Holiday Store program for families in need.

In all, 73 books were gifted to the school library and 264 books were purchased for classroom libraries.

The Book Fair was made possible by the Bledsoe PTA and chairperson Lori Cook, Librarian Kelli Snyder and many dedicated volunteers.
