Curtsinger Elementary Wins 21-Day Health Challenge

Apr 09, 2015

Frisco ISD was declared the winner this week in a friendly competition with Allen ISD to encourage students in both districts to live healthier lifestyles.

This spring, thousands of children participated in the Medical City Children’s Hospital kids teaching kids program. The 21-Day Health Challenge encouraged students to make and eat nutritious snacks utilizing a cookbook created by high school culinary and graphic design students.

The goal was to raise awareness and educate families about the importance of making smart decisions at snack time. Snacks typically account for 20-25% of a child’s diet.

The winning school district was determined by the percentage of students who signed up, completed the challenge and took a brief survey afterwards.

Frisco ISD edged out Allen ISD, 54 percent to 52 percent, thanks to the support of parents, physical education teachers and administrators who encouraged students to try new fruits and vegetables and develop healthy habits to last a lifetime.

FISD’s Curtsinger Elementary came in first place among schools in both districts, with nearly 87 percent of students who signed up completing the challenge. As a result, Curtsinger was awarded a $1,000 gift card to Kroger.

FISD’s Fowler Middle School also received a $500 gift card to Kroger for having the greatest percentage of students who signed up completing the challenge among Frisco ISD middle schools.

Joining the celebration at Curtsinger Elementary were educators, students and parents from both Frisco and Allen ISD, as well as representatives from Medical City Children’s Hospital and U.S. Congressman Sam Johnson, who honored all groups for their participation.

"I thank Medical City Dallas Hospital for helping to make this program, Snacking for Success, exactly that – a success!” Johnson said. “Together, we are working to lower childhood obesity rates and create a more healthy future for our children. It's an honor to help congratulate everyone involved - especially our students - for all that they've accomplished! I applaud them for their hard work and dedication to creating and eating healthier snacks!"

Next school year, several other school districts will join Frisco and Allen ISD in the 21-Day Challenge competition.
