Janice Stahly ScottStudents, parents and community members joined educators and special guests for a dedication ceremony on October 5 at Frisco ISD’s Scott Elementary School.

The celebration honored Janice Stahly Scott, a retired teacher and librarian who served the children of FISD for 33 years. Read more about the namesake.

“Ms. Scott inspired us to be life-long learners and engaged us and empowered many of us to achieve our goals and our dreams and to live productive lives and to be great citizens of this community,” said Debbie Carroll Boyce, a retired Frisco ISD principal who was both a student of Ms. Scott and colleague.

Scott, who came to Frisco in the sixties, served as a high school and middle school English teacher, middle school reading teacher and 4th and 5th grade classroom teacher.

She became the library media specialist at Curtsinger Elementary when it opened in 1995 and worked there until her retirement in 2010.

“Frisco – when I arrived, I was only 22 years old,” Ms. Scott told the audience in accepting the honor. “I was inexperienced and shy and the population of caring, friendly people was under 2,000. Thank you (former Frisco ISD superintendent) Mr. Stribling, thank you Frisco Independent School District, it has been a magnificent and unforgettable journey.”

Scott Elementary, located at 10550 Millbend Drive in McKinney, opened in August under the leadership of Principal Paige Brewer.

Brewer took time to thank Ms. Scott for her involvement at the school, which has already included greeting students, reading to them in the library and attending the school’s weekly assembly.

“Her passion for learning and sheer love of books is just transforming and it has helped countless numbers of students grow and reach their potential,” Brewer said. “Now, she shares that same encouragement and loving spirit with us here at Scott. And for that, we are grateful to be on her team.”

During the ceremony, guests enjoyed a special performance from members of the Scott Elementary choir, under the direction of music teacher Whitney Zorn, as well as dance by staff members. Refreshments and tours of the school were also available.

Scott Elementary was designed by architect SHW Group and built by construction manager Ratcliff Constructors, L.P. Its capacity is 760 students.
