Jun 05, 2014

Students from Frisco ISD's Smith Elementary School won first place in their category at the prestigious Destination Imagination (DI) Global Finals, the world's largest creative thinking and problem solving competition for kids.

The Clark Middle School team, which has been together since elementary school and is a multi-time Global Finals participant and winner, took fourth place in their category and a Renaissance Award.

More than 1,400 teams from 45 states and 16 countries participated in the event, held May 21-24 in Knoxville, Tennessee.

Destination Imagination is an educational program in which student teams solve open-ended challenges and present their solutions at tournaments.

The challenges require students to apply science, technology, engineering and math (STEM), in addition to improvisation, theater arts, writing, project management, communication, innovation, teamwork and community service.

Teams meet outside of the regular school day and are managed by parent leaders. The program requires many months of preparation and commitment on the part of students and parents.

Members of the Smith DI team include Kyle Bowser, Genevieve Dutra, Maggie McGrath, Deven Patel and Caden Senn. They are led by parent team manager Sunita Patel.

The group competed in the Fine Arts Challenge with a project was based on Japanese sculptor Sayaka Ganz. Students built a horse's torso with legs standing 4 feet tall and 3 feet wide made entirely out of spoons, forks and knives.
