Dr. Justin Wakeland served as Superintendent of Schools in the FISD from 1978-1997 for a total of 19 years. During that time, FISD grew from 800 students to 3,600 and was positioning itself for the most rapid growth experienced by any school district in the state of Texas. In addition to his service in FISD, he has served the larger education community as a founding member of the Collin County Community College District, as president of the Texas Association of Community Schools, as a member of the Executive Committee of the Texas Association of School Administrators and the UIL Legislative Committee and on the advisory panel to the Commissioner of Education from 1981-1990. This educator of 36 years was recognized as Region X Superintendent of the year in 1996 and was named Alumni of the Year by the University of North Texas School of Educational Administration in 1988.
A graduate of Waxahachie High School, Dr. Wakeland received his undergraduate degree from the University of Texas and his master’s and doctoral degrees from the University of North Texas. Prior to coming to the FISD he served as a teacher in the Dallas ISD and as an elementary, middle and high school administrator in DISD and in the Plano ISD. Dr. Wakeland also instilled a love of education in his daughter, Sherry, a graduate of Frisco High who today serves as principal of one of our elementary schools. Dr. Wakeland continues to be a supporter of our schools and education in his retirement; a family scholarship has been named for the Wakelands through generous donations to the Frisco Education Foundation.
