Frisco ISD Wrestling Teams Take First & Second at State Meet

Jan 29, 2016

Wrestling teams from Frisco ISD’s Liberty and Centennial high schools claimed top spots in the 5A Texas High School Wrestling Coaches Association (THSWCA) State Dual Tournament, held January 16 at Bryan High School. Sixteen teams from across the state were chosen by THSWCA to compete in the one-day tournament.

Liberty and the two-time defending champion Centennial advanced to face each other for the state title for the second year in a row, with the outcome again decided in the very last match. Junior Tyler Hogg pinned his opponent, winning the match and sealing the state title for Liberty, 36-27.

Liberty’s path to the championship included victories over Bryan High School, Houston Davis High School, Sharyland Pioneer High School, and Rockwall Heath High School before matching up with Centennial in the finals.

“The strength of our team is really in our depth,” said Liberty wrestling coach Jason Thurston. Overall, Liberty had twenty wrestlers compete across fourteen weight classes with everyone making a contribution to the team victory.

Both teams now have their sights set on vying for the UIL State Wrestling title. They will next compete against other FISD schools in the District 8-5A Wrestling Championships to be held February 5-6, 2016, at Lone Star High School in Frisco.

Congratulations to both teams – the state champions from Liberty and state runner-ups from Centennial – for their success!
