IHS Freshman Qualifies for National Speech and Debate Competition

Mar 04, 2015

Frisco ISD will send three high school students to compete in the National Speech & Debate Tournament, scheduled June 14-19 in Dallas.

To participate, students must place among the top competitors at one of 110 district tournaments across the country, which were held locally in February.

Centennial High School seniors Carly Suhr and Alexis Luoma advanced in Duo Interpretation, which involves students bringing pieces of literature, plays or poetry to life with their verbal presentation of the piece. No props or costumes are used.

Independence High School freshman Megan Shah qualified in Humorous Interpretation after a second place finish at the district tournament. In Humorous Interpretation, students also utilize a play, short story, or other published work, but the goal is to test a student’s comedic skills through script analysis, delivery, timing and character development. Competitors may portray one or multiple characters. Again, no props or costumes are used.
