Liberty Senior Joins Growing List of FISD Students to Achieve Top ACT Score

Sep 18, 2014

Frisco ISD students are doing better than ever on the ACT college admission and placement exam.

Over the past five years, average ACT scores have increased in every tested subject, including English, mathematics, reading and science, while participation in the exam has more than doubled.

The number of Frisco ISD students to achieve a perfect composite score of 36 also continues to grow.

Minsoo Kim with Liberty Principal Scott Warstler

Minsoo Kim, a senior at Liberty High School, is the most recent student to accomplish the feat. He only took the test once in June.

“I was really happy and really surprised,” he said. “It had been my goal all the time, but I didn’t think I would actually achieve it.”

Nationally, while the actual number of students earning a composite score of 36 varies from year to year, on average, less than one-tenth of 1 percent of students who take the ACT earns the top score.

Among test takers in the high school graduating class of 2014, only 1,407 of nearly 1.85 million students earned a composite score of 36.

Kim says he took several practice tests at home, but gives credit to his parents, Myunghwa Oh and Jinoh Kim of Frisco, and teachers who supported and encouraged him on his educational journey.

“The best wisdom I can give to fellow students is to listen to the support of your teachers and your family because they want what is best for you,” he said.

ACT test scores are accepted by all major U.S. colleges and universities. They are one of multiple criteria used in making admissions decisions and exceptional scores provide colleges with evidence of student readiness for the academic rigors that lie ahead.

“It gives me a lot of hope for the future,” said Kim, who plans to pursue a career in medicine.

At least five other FISD students have earned a perfect composite score of 36 on the ACT, including Liberty senior Trent Sandland, 2014 Centennial High School graduate Gianna Mason, 2014 Heritage High School graduate Revanth Poondla, 2013 Liberty graduate Tiffany Kuan and 2012 Liberty graduate Yueheng Zhang.

Average student test scores in FISD are well above state and national averages, as shown below.
