Orchestra Advances to State in Honor Contest

Jun 22, 2015

Orchestras from three Frisco ISD schools have advanced to the state level in honor contests sponsored by the Texas Music Educators Association (TMEA).

The Honor Orchestra selection process seeks to recognize and honor quality musicianship in the performance of advanced literature at the highest level.

Winners are selected by a panel of judges through a blind peer review of concert recordings submitted from across the state.

Among the advancing Frisco ISD schools:

  • The Liberty High School Symphony Orchestra is one of five state finalists in the high school full orchestra competition. The Symphony Orchestra is made up of students from the Symphonic Orchestra and the Symphonic Band. Students are directed by Julie Blackstock.
  • The Wester Middle School Symphony Orchestra is one of six state finalists in the middle school full orchestra competition. The Symphony Orchestra is made up of students from the Symphonic Orchestra and the Symphonic Band.  The Wester Symphony Orchestra is under the direction of Jennifer Vanhook, Brad Smith, Michelle Black and Jake Peralez.
  • The Fowler Middle School String Orchestra is one of eight state finalists in the middle school string orchestra competition. Students are led by director Karina Lindsey.

A winner will be announced in each category in late July.

Winning orchestras receive the honor of performing for music educators from across the state and country at the annual TMEA Convention in San Antonio.
