LSHS- CTE to offer ASVAB October 20

Sep 28, 2015

The Career and Technical Education Center (CTEC) will offer The Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery (ASVAB) for students in grades 10-12 twice this year. The first exam will be given on Tuesday, October 20th from 5:00-8:00 PM

The ASVAB is the most widely used multiple-aptitude test battery used in the world and well respected as a career investigation tool for students. The ASVAB Career Exploration Program provides high quality, career exploration and planning materials at NO COST. The exam is a series of eight short tests given in one sitting that help students identify their skills in a variety of areas:

· General Science

· Arithmetic Reasoning

· Word Knowledge

· Paragraph Comprehension

· Mathematics Knowledge

· Electronics Information

· Auto and Shop Information

· Mechanical Comprehension

Approximately one month after the exam, students will be able to attend the ASVAB Test interpretation. It is not required to attend the test interpretation, but it does help students understand their results. After taking the ASVAB, students receive three Career Exploration Scores. These scores tell students their current strengths in verbal, math, and science and technical skills as compared to other students in the same grade. A copy of the scores will also be sent to the student’s home campus.

There is not a “pass” or “fail” on this exam. But knowing your academic strengths and weaknesses now gives students time to work to improve upon them before they start a job, begin college or enter the military. This is also a great opportunity to practice what it is like to sit for a long exam like the ACT and/or SAT.

Before students take the ASVAB, they will be asked to sign a statement authorizing the Department of Defense to score their test and to return their results to the CTE Center for distribution to the students. Students will take the exam as an Option 8 which means that the scores are not given to the military. Students in 11th or 12th grade may opt to share them with a recruiter if they so choose but participation in the ASVAB Program does not obligate students to talk with military recruiters or to consider a military career. Juniors and seniors may opt to use their ASVAB (AFQT) score for military enlistment for up to two years after taking the ASVAB if they so choose. Again, this score is not given to anyone other than the student and their home campus. It does not reflect on their GPA, Class Rank, nor is it ever given to a 3rd party (like a college recruiter or a military recruiter).
