Registration Underway for Secondary Summer School

May 14, 2018

Online learning opportunities will be available this summer for students entering grades 9-12 who need to take courses for credit recovery or wish to do so for advancement, as well as options for remediation in math, English, science and social studies for students currently in grades 6-8.

The online structure for secondary summer school provides greater flexibility and allows students to work at their own pace, with more control and responsibility over their own learning. Students can work from home, or may benefit from visiting one of the two summer school locations for assistance or dedicated study time.

Coursework can be completed anytime, anywhere there is Internet access, though students must take exams on-site at either Independence or Wakeland high schools during summer school hours. Pre-assessments must also be completed in-person by students taking courses for credit recovery or remediation.

Teachers will be available at both campuses on set dates and times to assist students who are taking courses for credit recovery. Students taking courses for advancement can take advantage of FISD computer labs during summer school hours, and an online form will be available to assist with questions and provide subject-specific support.

Students will have 24/7 access to online courses from June 12 to July 19, 2018. Students can take final exams any time during summer school hours once they have finished the coursework, but exams must be completed by Tuesday, July 24 at 12 p.m.

The cost of summer school is $200 per course for middle school students and $300 per semester course for high school students. Financial assistance is available for those taking courses for remediation or credit recovery who qualify for free and reduced lunch.

Registration is currently underway online for both middle and high school students and closes Thursday, June 7 at 3 p.m. School counselors will continue to contact parents of students failing one or more core classes with enrollment information.

In-person registration assistance will also be available at Independence High School on Wednesday, June 6 from 8 to 11 a.m. Out-of-District students must enroll in person that afternoon between 12 and 3 p.m.
