May 07, 2018

Fowler Pentathlon Team

A team of seventh graders from Fowler Middle School posted the top score in the state in Academic Pentathlon, a first in the history of Frisco ISD. As state champions, the team qualifies for the national competition May 18.

Team members include Shrenick Gannamani, Goutham Aelluri, Elise Wang, Sarah Tang, Shrinarayanee Rengarajan, Ahmad Yousuf, Mahit Madathil and Cameron Gibbs. Coaches are Alayne Hill and Julie Brown.

Academic Pentathlon is designed to serve as a learning experience and feeder program for the Octathlon and Decathlon competitions. It is offered at all FISD middle schools for students in grades 7-8.

The Pentathlon competition consists of five events: math, social studies, science, literature, fine arts and Super Quiz. The Super Quiz event is an oral relay before a large audience in which students work collaboratively on grade level to answer ten multiple-choice questions. Each year, a new overlying theme or topic is selected for study in conjunction with the essential readiness skills of the STAAR tests.

Several FISD teams competed in the regional Pentathlon competition held April 21 in Garland. Following the competition, scores were compared from regional contests across the state to determine statewide winners.

In addition to the state-champion, seventh-grade team from Fowler, the following FISD teams also finished in the top ten in the state:

  • Fowler Middle School eighth-grade team - 3rd in the state

  • Vandeventer Middle School seventh-grade team - 10th in the state
