School Wins Honors in National Music Competition

Oct 01, 2015

Band and orchestra students from six Frisco ISD schools have been lauded for their performances through the 2015 Foundation for Music Education Mark of Excellence competition.

The national competition seeks to recognize and award outstanding achievement in performance through the following projects: National Wind Band Honors, National Choral Honors, National Orchestra Honors, National Jazz Honors and National Percussion Ensemble Honors.

Groups submit recordings to enter the competition. The top quarter are selected as national winners and the second quarter receive commended honors.

Congratulations to the following Frisco ISD winners in the National Wind Band Honors and National Orchestra Honors projects:

  • Maus Middle School Wind Ensemble, directed by Katie Lewis (Class A)
  • Stafford Middle School Honor Band, directed by Christian Holzer, Benjamin Kelly and Kristin Wilson (Class AA)
  • Wester Middle School Symphonic Band, directed by Brad Smith (Class AA)
  • Liberty High School Wind Ensemble, directed by Jamie Weaver (Class 5A)
  • Vandeventer Middle School Chamber Orchestra, directed by Daniel Rodriguez (Middle School String Orchestra)

The Hunt Middle School Symphonic Band, directed by Kristin Dillard, was also recognized with commended honors in Class A of the National Wind Band Honors project.

A total of 229 of the finest musical ensembles in the nation entered the Mark of Excellence competition.

“This year’s entries set a new standard of musical achievement with many stunning performances,” said Rick Yancey, Managing Director of the Mark of Excellence contest. “These young students perform incredibly well, and that is a testament to their talent, training, and wonderful teachers!”

In addition, the Liberty High School Symphonic Winds, directed by Marty Ball, was the Citation of Excellence winner for Class 5A. Citation of Excellence is a similar competition, also hosted by the Foundation for Music Education, for non-varsity high school bands in Texas.

All the groups receive recorded and written comments from the adjudicators, as well as a compilation recording of the performances of the national winners.
