Mitzi Garner is excited to begin her 17th year in education as the principal of Nelson Middle School! Mitzi comes to us from Trent Middle School where she served as Assistant Principal and was instrumental in opening that campus. In addition, she served as Assistant Principal at Wester Middle School. Prior to coming to Frisco ISD she served as an Assistant Principal at McKinney North High School and was the Secondary Math Coordinator in McKinney ISD. Preceding her administrative experience, Mitzi taught 6th-8th grade mathematics in both McKinney and Los Angeles. Mrs. Garner is a graduate of San Diego State University and received her Master’s in Curriculum and Instruction from Dominguez Hills University and a Master’s in Educational Leadership from Concordia University. When she isn’t serving as principal, Mrs. Garner loves to spend time with her husband and two children. She mentors young women in the North Dallas area and loves to stay physically active.

Dr. Kaitlyn Mathews is entering her fourth year with Frisco ISD, and is thrilled to join the
Nighthawk family as an Assistant Principal! Over the years, she has taught U.S. History,
Government, World Geography, AP Psychology, on-level Psychology, and Sociology. She is married to
Zack Mathews, who is a Plano police officer, and together they have two wild and crazy “doodle”
dogs, Tank and Tex, who keep them on their toes!

St. Louis’ and the University of Missouri’s (Mizzou) sports teams hold a special place in Dr.
Mathews’ heart! She considers St. Louis “home,” and you can find her cheering on the Tigers, Blues,
and Cardinals year-round! She graduated from Mizzou (MIZ!) with a bachelor’s degree in History
and a minor in Multicultural Studies, holds a master’s degree in Educational Leadership and Policy
Studies from the University of Texas at Arlington, and a doctorate in Curriculum & Instruction
through the University of South Carolina.

Assistant Principal - April Emerson

I am pleased to announce our new Assistant Principals! April is an accomplished educator with 12
years of experience in public education. She is thrilled to start her administrative journey as an
Assistant Principal at Nighthawk Nation! Mrs. Emerson joins us from Pioneer Heritage Middle
School here in Frisco, where she taught ILA. She also served as the Instructional coach for the
ILA department and has served as a team lead. Prior to her tenure at Pioneer, she taught at
Wakeland High School where she was the lead 9 th grade English teacher. Ms. Emerson earned a Bachelors of Art in English from the Texas Women’s University and her Masters of Education in
Leadership from Abilene Christian University.

When she is not working, Mrs. Emerson loves to spend her free time with her husband Jeff and
daughter Abi who will be a sophomore at IHS next year.
