Vandeventer Pep Rally Honors Harper and Her Roar

Feb 16, 2015

ms_vms_harpersroarThe Vandeventer Middle School family showed their love and support for sixth grade teacher Holly Singh and her family during a pep rally in January, while also raising awareness for a rare hereditary disease. The guest of honor was Singh’s young daughter Harper, who was diagnosed with spinal muscular atrophy, or SMA, at about six months old.

SMA impacts a person’s physical strength by affecting the motor nerve cells in the spinal cord, taking away the ability to walk, eat or breathe. One in 6,000 children are affected and one in 40 people unknowingly carry the gene that causes it. There is currently no cure for SMA.

To show their support for the family, cheerleaders performed a special cheer in Harper’s honor and the choir performed Katy Perry’s Roar, which has become an anthem of Harper’s fighting spirit.
