Wester Book Program Wins State Award

Apr 01, 2015

Liz FriendWester Middle School Librarian Liz Friend will accept the Young Adult Reading Incentive (YARI) Award from the Texas Library Association (TLA) in April at the TLA Annual Conference in Austin.

The award is given annually to honor a Texas librarian who has shown exceptional ability in motivating young adults to read by developing and implementing a reading incentive program for young adults in grades 6-12.

Friend applied for the award after a very successful book program at Wester in December.

This year’s program, “SONNENBLITZ!” featured books by Jordan Sonnenblick, whose books include the middle school “classic,” Drums, Girls & Dangerous Pie.

A reading competition between six teams in the three grades ended up with a total of more than 200,000 pages of Sonnenblick’s books being read school-wide. There were also weekly activities, including a driving impaired lunchtime presentation done by SRO Justin Hawthorn, a bubble-blowing contest and a “Dangerous Pie-Eating Contest.”

Friend will receive an engraved plaque and $500 stipend.
