Jamba Juice Tests Drone Delivery of Smoothies with Frisco ISD Students

Oct 12, 2016

Jamba Juice is researching technology innovation in hospitality with future engineers at Frisco ISD. The healthy living company has partnered with Frisco ISD Career & Technical Education Center’s engineering students to create devices to deliver smoothies by drone. Students from the CTEC’s Project Lead the Way engineering program designed created and tested carriers for Jamba Juice to use with drones to transport smoothies. The students introduced the drone carrier they designed on Wednesday, October 12 to Mr. David Pace, CEO of Jamba Juice, along with Dr. Jeremy Lyon, Frisco ISD Superintendent.  After the introduction and explanation of the carrier there was a test flight smoothie delivery to
Mr. Pace via the drone (shown right).

“This was a true real-world learning experience for our students,” said Ken Strong, teacher at the Frisco ISD Career and Technical Education Center. “We gave them an idea of the project, asked them to brainstorm ideas and then design, test and build a solution using the 3D printing.”

This was an enrichment activity for select Principles of Engineering and Engineering Design and Development students. The students were led by CTEC PLTW certified teachers Ken Strong and Travis Volk.  All of the work was done outside the normal school day. The project timeline was 2 weeks from introduction to completion.

Jamba Juice is relocating its headquarters, the Whirl’d Support Center, to Frisco from Emeryville, California. On Monday, October 17, the company will open a Jamba Juice store on the first floor of its new corporate building at HALL Park. The company will celebrate its arrival in North Texas with a Whirl’d Tour, featuring a week of activities including drone test flights, free smoothie deliveries and Jamba for a Year for one lucky North Texan.

More details about the Whirl’d Tour, including Jamba for a Year, will be announced on Monday, October 17, and available on and the company’s social media pages.
