The junior won the championship for the second straight year after a weather-shortened tournament in Georgetown.
With all the golf talent in Texas, it’s a major achievement for a golfer to win a UIL state title. But Wakeland’s Luke Colton has now achieved it twice..
Colton, a junior, defended his 5A state championship this week at Legacy Hills Golf Course in Georgetown. In a tournament that was shortened to one 18-hole round because of rains on Monday and Tuesday, Colton’s 3-under 69 in the first round became the winning score.
Colton, who won the title by one stroke over Highland Park’s Brooks Simmons, has now medaled in each of his three UIL state championships. He finished as state runner-up his freshman year before winning the last two titles.
On Monday, the UIL announced that it planned to have a 36-hole tournament in one day, instead of the typical back-to-back days, because of the expected rain on Tuesday. However, the heavy rains arrived on Monday before the second round and the rain continued for much of Tuesday.
There were no FISD teams at the boys state championship, but a week ago, the Centennial girls finished as the 5A state runner-up.
