International Baccalaureate

Frisco High School invites all eighth grade parents to learn more about the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme, a rigorous, academically challenging curriculum that’s only housed at FHS, at an Oct. 28 webinar and in-person info night Nov. 6.

What is IBDP? The courses in the two-year International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme are designed to broaden students’ educational experience and challenge them to apply their knowledge and skills.

IBDP builds critical thinking, inquiry, writing and communication skills.

“IB students don’t just learn information to repeat it back,” said Elyse Adams, Frisco High IB coordinator. “They’re taught to think deeply, carefully analyze their resources and justify their ideas while applying their knowledge in varied contexts."

Who would be interested in IBDP? Students and families looking for a rigorous, college-level experience.

Who can take part? IB courses are taken in the 11th and 12th grades, but families are asked to apply for students entering ninth grade so that four-year planning can begin at Frisco High.

“We want them to be part of that campus as though it’s their own,” said Krishna Chetty, advanced academics coordinator.

What are the similarities and differences between IB similar and other advanced courses?

GPA: IB is on the same Tier III GPA scale as Advanced Placement courses.

College credit: College credit is based on individual courses, similar to AP, and is determined by each university. Students are encouraged to look into their college of choice and do research on what they accept.

I’m in! What’s next? Admissions forms will be accepted Oct. 28-Nov. 21 for existing FISD students entering ninth grade for the upcoming school year. The program has open enrollment, so any FISD student can apply. Acceptance is done through a lottery.
