Wakeland’s Jonette Dalfonzo Celebrated with Golden Apple Award

Jonette Dalfonzo, head theater director at Wakeland High School, has received the Golden Apple Educator of the Year Award from the Texas Thespians.

Texas Thespians’ Golden Apple Award recognizes educators with at least 10 years’ experience who are dedicated to promoting educational theater. Dalfonzo — who has been in education for 32 years, including 20 in Frisco ISD and eight at Wakeland — was chosen from among dozens of nominees for the state honor.

Wakeland theater has flourished under Dalfonzo’s direction, earning a number of awards for the program and individual students. In 2022, Wakeland’s Curtains, the Musical won Best Musical in the Broadway Dallas High School Musical Theatre Awards, a first for Frisco ISD.

“I am truly honored to receive the Golden Apple Award from Texas Thespians, and it serves as a reminder of the incredible journey I've had in Frisco ISD and at Wakeland High School,” Dalfonzo said. “My time in Frisco has been filled with passion, growth and, most importantly, the privilege of working with talented and dedicated students who continually inspire me.”

One of the nomination letters cited Dalfonzo’s dedication to education and impact on her students — an impact that has inspired several of them to become theater directors, too.

Dalfonzo said she’s grateful for the support of the Wakeland administration, fine arts coordinator Cade Butler, and her husband, Vic.

“The Frisco ISD theater programs have developed a culture where collaboration, dedication and a love for the craft are always at the forefront,” she said. “Over the past 20 years, I have watched all of the theater programs in Frisco grow and flourish. I couldn't be prouder of having been a small part of that journey.”

Congratulations, Mrs. Dalfonzo!
