The FISD community is invited to explore the space, which includes sensory supports and books on parenting, disabilities and learning strategies.

The Frisco ISD community is invited to the grand reopening of the Parent Sanctuary and Lending Library at the Early Childhood School from 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 28.

The Parent Sanctuary and Lending Library was created in 2015 as a place for all FISD parents and educators to find resources, support and inspiration.

The lending library includes:

  • Books related to general parenting and parenting children with disabilities; children’s books about disabilities; and books specific to a variety of diagnoses.

  • Books about sensory strategies, social skills, behavior strategies, raising gifted children, siblings, teaching tools and research.

  • Various sensory items, games, manipulatives and self-care items to try at home or in the classroom.

After a refresh that included new paint, furniture and hundreds of new books, sensory items and teaching tools, the space will be able to serve more FISD families and staff than ever.

“It’s truly a place for all,” said Kimberly Goushey, lead in-home and parent trainer.

The idea: The special education department developed the parent sanctuary after hearing from several parents who felt confused and alone after receiving their child’s diagnosis.

“Those things clicked, and we recognized that families need a place to connect for support after diagnosis,” Goushey said. “Curating a thoughtful selection of resources for families and staff to borrow and explore has been a wonderful way to extend learning and create community.”

How it works: The Parent Sanctuary and Lending Library is open Fridays from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., and is accessible by any Frisco ISD employee or parent, regardless of special education eligibility. No appointments, referrals or advance notice are needed.

FISD staff are there to help guide parents, answer questions about what materials best suit their needs and facilitate the check-out process.

The lending library is housed at the Early Childhood School because it is where many families first learn of their child’s diagnosis, though it is open to families from all campuses.

Stop by: The FISD community is invited to the Feb. 28 grand reopening to explore the space, speak with knowledgeable professionals and check out materials. The event is come and go. RSVP here.

The Parent Sanctuary and Lending Library will also be open from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, April 18.
