FISD students and the community are urged to be aware when traveling in school zones.

By Frisco ISD Communication

As the first day of school approaches, Frisco ISD is sharing tips to stay safe on the roads.

Parents are encouraged to discuss the following safety tips with their children, and to check out this helpful video, "Your Safety Matters: Crosswalk Encounters."

  • Mark your calendar: The next Walk, Bike and Roll to School Day is Oct. 5!

Tips for walking safely

  • Only cross at crosswalks and intersections.

  • Follow all instructions from crossing guards, who are stationed near schools to direct pedestrian and vehicle traffic. (FISD has a need for crossing guards and is currently hiring for those positions.)

  • Look both ways before crossing, and make eye contact with drivers.

  • Walk, don’t run, when crossing the street. Walking gives drivers more time to see you.

  • Watch for turning cars. They may not see you as they turn. Pedestrians have the right of way, but most accidents happen from a driver’s failure to yield when turning.

  • Heads up, phones down, headphones off!

Tips for biking safely

  • Wear a helmet, always.

  • Use hand signals so drivers know where you’re going.

  • Walk your bike in a crosswalk, don’t ride it.

  • Yield to pedestrians.

Tips for drivers

  • Watch for school zones. Reduce your speed to 20 mph.

  • Watch for children. Always yield to pedestrians in the crosswalk; it’s the law.

  • Phones down.

  • Drop off students only at designated areas or curbs.
