The Centennial tennis team capped off another dominant season with a 10-1 victory over Corpus Christi Flour Bluff in the championship match.

In Centennial’s three straight Class 5A state team tennis titles, there hasn’t been a lot of drama. Just like the last two years, the Titans were dominant Thursday (Oct. 23) on the final day of the season, beating Corpus Christi Flour Bluff 10-1 in the championship match.
No, there wasn’t much drama on the courts at the Hurd Tennis Center in Waco. There was, however, a lot of emotion as Centennial won its third championship on its fourth straight trip to the UIL state tournament.
It was evident in the cheers between each point as Centennial took command by taking a 6-1 lead after the seven doubles matches. And it showed as the Titans wrapped up the title with four singles wins, prompting the public-address announcement for the players in other matches to stop playing and report to the awards area.
It was all over, and Centennial had made it look easy on the courts at Baylor University. But it wasn’t easy, and Centennial coach Douglas Fair made that clear after a season in which the Titans set the highest of expectations and then lived up to them.
“It means a lot to win a third consecutive title,” Fair said. “When I️ leave the site when the state tourney is over, I️ think I️ may never have another opportunity to come back. We don't take winning titles for granted. It takes hard work and performing at a high level when it matters most.”
Centennial had to be at its very best simply to get to the state tournament. The Titans had to beat powerhouse Highland Park in the third round and fellow Frisco ISD school Independence in the 5A Region II final. Playing against FISD schools loaded with tennis talent helps the Titans prepare for the intensity of the postseason.
The Titans' championship put a bow on another impressive fall season of tennis in FISD, which had eight teams in the Texas Tennis Coaches Association state rankings. Those Frisco schools mostly knocked each other out in the playoffs, and in 4A, Panther Creek advanced to the regional final.
Centennial was ranked No. 2 in 5A for most of the season behind Abilene Wylie, but the Titans beat Wylie 10-3 in the state semifinals on Thursday. The 20-4 combined match score at this year’s state tournament shows just how elite the Centennial tennis program was this year.
And last year. And the year before that. It has become the expected at Centennial.
But that doesn’t mean it’s easy. It never is.
“My Titans are tough,” Fair said. “I'm so impressed with how they performed in the playoffs. I couldn't be prouder.”
