Frisco ISD students of voting age can register on their own campus — and now’s the time to do it, as the Oct. 6 registration deadline nears.
Eligible high school students have access to voter registration cards in their campus library. As required by the Texas Secretary of State, each campus also has a deputy voter registrar, usually the principal or their designee, who completes the process.
Registering students to vote is just one way Frisco ISD encourages civic engagement.
From kindergarten through high school, FISD students are learning that voting is a critical part of citizenship, via Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS).In kindergarten through fifth grade, students use voting as a method for group decision making.
In first grade, students explain and practice voting as a way of making choices and decisions.
In second and third grades, students learn to identify characteristics of good citizenship, including participation in government by educating oneself about the issues, respectfully holding public officials to their word, and voting.
In secondary, students learn more about laws that protect the right to vote and evaluate the importance of participating in elections, among other TEKS.
Making it simple for eligible students to register to vote also aligns with the District's culture of voting, adopted by the Board of Trustees in 2017. A culture of voting is one that encourages maximum participation by District employees and eligible students in the elections process.
By law, Frisco ISD does not endorse candidates, parties or measures, and voter registration on campuses is a nonpartisan process.
