Frisco ISD runners finished strong Monday at the Class 5A Region II Cross Country Championships, led by regional boys champion Andrew Malan of Lebanon Trail and three FISD teams qualifying for the state meet.
Malan finished the boys 5K course at the Harold Patterson Sports Complex in Arlington in 15 minutes, 51.72 seconds. He took the lead early in the race and held it as the region’s best 5A cross country runners chased him. The senior, who finished third at last year’s Region II meet, won the race by nearly five seconds.
Wakeland was the highest-finishing FISD boys team, placing third to qualify for the UIL Cross Country State Championships, which will be Friday and Saturday, Oct. 31 and Nov. 1, in Round Rock (the 5A state race will be Friday). Wakeland’s Bradley Vacek finished sixth in the boys race and Reedy’s Parker Cathey was seventh.
In the 5A girls competition, both Wakeland (third) and Reedy (fourth) qualified as teams for the state meet. Reedy’s Julia Seelman finished third overall, while Wakeland’s Lily Schmidt was fifth and Wakeland’s Presley Robertson was sixth.
Also finishing in the top 10 in the team standings were the Liberty girls (sixth), Centennial girls (eighth) and Reedy boys (sixth). The top four teams in each region qualify for the state meet, along with the top 10 individual runners who are not part of the teams that qualified.
In the 4A Region II boys race on Tuesday, Panther Creek's Luke Rugg finished 16th.
