iberty High School’s online student newspaper, Wingspan, has earned the prestigious Online Pacemaker Award from the National Scholastic Press Association for the 10th straight year.
Liberty is one of 12 schools in the country to receive the Online Pacemaker Award, chosen from among 125 submissions across 27 states and three countries. The Pacemaker, called the "Pulitzer Prize of student journalism,” honors the best of the best in scholastic journalism.
Wingspan also earned the Gold Crown Award in the High School Digital News category from Columbia University. The Crown Awards are the highest recognition given by the Columbia Scholastic Press Association to a student print or digital medium for overall excellence.
Wingspan is one of only three programs in the country to earn both a Gold Crown Award in High School Digital News, and an Online Pacemaker Award.
Wingspan is led by editors-in-chief Christine Han, Addyson Schick and Sarayu Bongale, and adviser Brian Higgins. The award-winning staff includes students from Higgins’ journalism, AV productions (broadcast), WTV and Wingspan classes.
"Seeing our name as both a NSPA Pacemaker and a CSPA Gold Crown winner is such an exhilarating experience, and it's something that never gets old,” Higgins said. “I think everyone wants to be recognized for their work and these awards are the ultimate validation of what we do."
