Frisco ISD’s beginner dance students put their best foot forward at this month’s Dance Educators Assessment of Learning, earning Division 1s across the board.
This is the first time all 12 high schools have earned the top rating at the annual assessment, in a testament to the growth and development of FISD dance programs.
On assessment day, dance directors learn a routine they must teach their students on the spot, applying what they learned quickly. Technique is critical to students’ success, but so is excellent communication — and this year’s results show just how well teachers are meeting those standards in the classroom.
“It’s clear that our dance teachers are growing in their craft through the use of effective teaching strategies,” said Kristy Platt, Reedy High School dance director and District dance team lead. “Not only do they implement practices that improve performance, but they also build positive relationships with their students, which creates a safe environment to learn.”
After each routine, judges shared comments and critiques with students and directors, providing feedback to grow and improve.
The Texas Dance Educators Association sponsors DEAL every year to recognize exceptional dance practices aligned with the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills, or TEKS. Frisco is among only a few dozen Texas school districts that participate in DEAL, a distinction that illustrates the importance of dance education and evaluation in the District.
Frisco ISD is proud to offer a wide selection of opportunities for students to explore new and developing interests as they grow during their public education. In high school, students can elect to take Dance I without any prerequisite or tryouts, and the class fulfills graduation requirements for both high school PE and fine arts.
