Over 60 middle and high school bands earned the top “Superior” ratings in both concert and sight-reading portions of the contest this spring.
Over 60 Frisco ISD secondary bands earned top ratings in the recent UIL Concert and Sight Reading Evaluations, after spending all spring preparing for the assessment.
Many high schools and middle schools had at least one band earn “Sweepstakes,” for receiving “Superior” ratings on both the concert and sight-reading portions. In total, 26 high school bands and 36 middle school bands earned Sweepstakes.
Each spring, Frisco ISD band students and their directors participate in UIL Concert and Sight Reading Evaluations, where they must perform three prepared pieces and a piece that is learned on-site.
In the concert portion, a panel of judges rates the performances with a 1st Division, or Superior; 2nd Division, or Excellent; and so on. A separate group of judges rates the sight-reading portion, where bands are given a short amount of time to learn a piece of music they’ve never seen before, then perform it. A band's final rating is determined as an average of the judges' scores in each area.
