Soccer Team

The Wakeland girls soccer team is headed back to the state championship, and the Wolverines will be rolling into Georgetown with a lot of momentum.

Wakeland was dominant in its 5A Division II state semifinal Friday night, beating Grapevine 3-0 at Buddy Echols Field in Coppell. Wakeland (24-0-1), which scored all three of its goals in the first half, will play Cedar Park (23-2-1) at 11 a.m. Friday (April 11) at Georgetown ISD’s Birkelbach Stadium.

Wakeland, which has not lost a match since the 2023 season, is seeking the program’s fifth UIL state title. The Wolverines won the 5A title last year, finishing with a 26-0-3 record, and also won state titles in 2011, 2018 and 2022.

Wakeland’s first goal against Grapevine was scored a mere six minutes into the match when Morgan Landry finished off a rebound of her own penalty kick. Audrey Gilbert and Kendi Smith also scored before halftime for the Wolverines. The outcome was never in doubt after that in a match in which Wakeland had 17 shots on goal to only one for Grapevine, as reported by the Dallas Morning News.

Wakeland has outscored its opponents 19-3 in the playoffs.

Go Wakeland! Go Frisco ISD!
