The High School Musical Theatre Awards celebrate the best of the best in North Texas theater.
Three Frisco ISD high school theater programs celebrated wins at last month’s Broadway Dallas High School Musical Theatre Awards.
The High School Musical Theatre Awards celebrate the best of the best in North Texas theater. The awards are open to any public, private or charter high school, and schools of all sizes compete in the same categories. Nominees and teachers were honored in a special ceremony, modeled after the Tony Awards, in May.
Congratulations to the following Frisco ISD winners:
Lone Star High School, Bright Star - Outstanding Scenic Design
Memorial High School, Matilda - Outstanding Costume Design
Wakeland High School, Pippin - Outstanding Sound Design
David Trejo, Wakeland - $2,500 scholarship
Wakeland High School theater is led by directors Jonette Dalfonzo and Olivia Cantrell. Memorial’s theater program is led by directors Nikki Silva and Julie Melone. Lone Star theater directors are Richard Dennis and Sydney Aviles.
“Receiving an award from Broadway Dallas is an incredible honor,” said Cade Butler, fine arts coordinator. “Frisco ISD’s success at these awards year after year just goes to show that high school theater can reach exceptional artistic heights."
These awards continue a tradition of excellence for Frisco ISD theater. This spring, nine students competed at the state UIL Theatrical Design Contest. FISD was also one of only 10 Texas school districts to be named a Texas Thespians Premier Community for Theatre Education this year, and the District received an Award of Distinction from the Texas Educational Theatre Association last fall.
