ANelson Middle School student has claimed the state championship in this year’s Junior Citizen Bee.
Eighth grader Shruthi Baskar took first place at the recent championship, earning $500. Roach Middle School eighth grader Avya Agarwal earned third place and $100.
Students’ months of preparation not only readied them for Junior Citizen Bee, but also reinforced eighth grade standards outlined in the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills.
Junior Citizen Bee can also serve as a study guide for the STAAR exam. In eighth grade, students learn about important people, places and documents in U.S. history, and compete on those same facts in Junior Citizen Bee.
At the end of eighth grade, students can not only explain the importance of the U.S. Constitution, but who signed it, the founding documents and events that influenced its creation, all amendments and their legal context, and the interpretation through the years. And that’s just the beginning.
Through this combination of classroom learning and competition, eighth graders have developed a deeper understanding of the material — and appreciation for U.S. history.

Shruthi and Avya will be honored at the May 12 Board meeting.
Congratulations!
