Congratulations to the two middle schoolers who advance in the competition, which tests students’ knowledge and understanding of American history.
risco ISD students who are passionate about American history and civics had their time to shine in the recent Junior Citizen Bee competition.
Hundreds of FISD middle schoolers competed on their campus in the Junior Citizen Bee for the chance to advance to region, then state. The competition tests students’ knowledge and understanding of key concepts in American history — including important people, documents and events.
“The Junior Citizen Bee competition gets kids excited about learning history and civics,” said Patience LeBlanc, secondary social studies coordinator for FISD. “It gets them thinking about our history and about how our government works to become active citizens."
Junior Citizen Bee questions reinforce eighth grade standards outlined in the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills, and can serve as a study guide for the STAAR exam.
Every Frisco ISD middle school participated in the bee, with each sending at least two students to the first round of Region 10 competition, the written test. All 11 students who advanced to Region 10’s second round, the oral competition, were from Frisco ISD.
At the Region 10 competition, Roach’s Avya Agarwal took first place, Nelson’s Shruthi Baskar got second and Fowler’s Alice Yang was third. The top two advance to the third annual state Junior Citizen Bee, which will be held April 30-May 1. Winners will receive cash prizes.
Congratulations to the following Region 10 winners at each Frisco ISD middle school. Those who advanced to the Region 10 oral competition, listed in bold, will be recognized at the Board of Trustees’ regular May meeting.
