An outstanding 68 Frisco ISD bands received top ratings at the recent UIL Concert and Sight Reading Evaluations, showcasing months of practice and dedication.
This year, every high school varsity band received “Sweepstakes,” for earning “Superior” ratings on both the concert and sight-reading portions. In total, 34 high school bands and 34 middle school bands earned Sweepstakes.
These awards cap off a wildly successful spring for secondary music programs, including:
Each spring, Frisco ISD band students and their directors participate in UIL Concert and Sight Reading Evaluations, where they must perform three prepared pieces and a piece that is learned on-site.
In the concert portion, a panel of judges rates the performances with a 1st Division, or Superior; 2nd Division, or Excellent; and so on. A separate group of judges rates the sight-reading portion, where bands are given a short amount of time to learn a piece of music they’ve never seen before, then perform it. A band's final rating is determined as an average of the judges' scores in each area.
