The Heritage boys track and field team won the 5A Region 2 championship Saturday, leading the weekend’s long list of accomplishments by Frisco ISD track and field athletes and teams.
Heritage won five event gold medals, helping it pile up 65 points to edge Red Oak (64) in the boys standings. The Heritage girls also had a strong showing, finishing sixth in the team standings. The Lebanon Trail boys (ninth) and Wakeland girls (10th) also finished in the top 10 in the team standings in 5A, and the Panther Creek girls were eighth at the 4A Region 2 championships.
Two Frisco ISD athletes won multiple 5A Region 2 individual titles, with Heritage’s CJ Williams winning the boys shot put and discus and Lebanon Trail’s Andrew Malan winning the 1,600 and 3,200 meters. Athletes from FISD won a total of 22 medals.
The top two finishers in each event qualify for the UIL state meet, which will be May 14 (4A) and May 15 (5A) at Mike A. Myers Stadium in Austin. The best performance among the third-place finishers in each of the state’s four regions also earns a spot at the state meet.
