For the fifth straight year, the Centennial tennis team is headed to the state tournament.
The Titans earned a spot in the Class 5A state semifinals with a tense 10-7 victory Friday over another powerhouse they know well: Frisco High. The victory gave Centennial the 5A Region 2 championship.
The Reedy and Lone Star tennis teams also played Friday, each taking on a different opponent in the 5A Region 2 semifinals. Amarillo defeated Reedy 10-4 and Abilene Wylie defeated Lone Star 10-1, ending fantastic seasons by the FISD schools.
Centennial is the three-time defending 5A state champion in team tennis, but it will face a tough state semifinal opponent – either Amarillo or Abilene Wylie – next week. The 5A state semifinals will be Wednesday in San Antonio. The championship match, featuring the semifinal winners, will be Thursday in San Antonio.
Centennial’s road to the state semifinals has included wins over Birdville (12-1), Hallsville (10-0), Highland Park (10-9), Midlothian (10-3) and Frisco (10-7). In 2022, Centennial became the first Frisco ISD team to qualify for the UIL state tournament and finished as 5A state runner-up. The Titans then won the last three 5A state titles.
Here are this year’s UIL state tennis details.
