Frisco ISD’s DECA students have a long tradition of excellence, which continued this year as more than 265 state competitors advanced to the International Career Development Conference in April.
Over 600 Frisco ISD students competed at the DECA State Career Development Conference, held in Dallas at the end of February. With nearly 8,000 competitors total, this year’s state conference was the largest and most competitive in history.
Also at the state conference, Emerson High School was named Chapter of the Year, after completing several required tasks and beating out other qualifying chapters.
“We started the year with one goal in mind: to win Texas DECA Chapter of the Year,” said Emerson DECA sponsor Revenia Lock. “My students and I are really excited about this honor! Winning this recognition means all the hard work and dedication that Emerson has put in this year has paid off.”
Frisco ISD also has two new state officers: Wakeland junior Tad Tolbert and Reedy sophomore Maggie Nemalikanti.
Tad said he hopes as a state officer, he can help other high schoolers find their passion through DECA.
“Because of DECA, I have a renewed sense of appreciation for what it means to take responsibility not only for your own life goals but also the responsibility of helping others achieve their goals as well, something I've found to be nearly just as fulfilling,” Tad said.
Maggie also wants to help others develop through DECA.
“To me, becoming a state officer is really rewarding because I get to pass on the many experiences and lessons I’ve learned over the past couple years,” she said. “DECA has made me a better public speaker, helped me make new friends and made me so much more confident overall, and that’s why I’m so excited about the opportunity to give back.”
DECA prepares emerging leaders and entrepreneurs for careers in marketing, finance, hospitality and management. DECA is one of several career and technical student organizations offered in Frisco ISD that develop future-ready skills through academic competition.
